Zhou Chunya was born in 1955 in Chongqing in the Sichuan Province of China. In 1982 he graduated from the Department of Painting of Sichuan Academy of Fine Art in China and in 1988 graduated from Experiment Art Department of Kassel Academy of Fine Art in Germany. Zhou Chunya is best-known for his colourful “green dog” series of paintings. But he is also considered one of the most talented painters of nature and rural scenes in the country. His works are almost expressionists: sometimes he uses jagged brush strokes and other times creating colourful, blurred sweeping landscapes. His canvases are often filled with figures left alone in the world or nature scenes devoid of humans. In recent years he has begun to paint a series of portraits filled with sexual scenes in nature. These are his solo Exhibitions: “Zhou Chunya” at Shanghai Gallery of Art in 2006; the “Green Dogs” at 314 International Art Centre Bergen in Norway in 2002; the “Zhou Chunya” Museum of Art Modern Contemporary of Trento in Italy; “The Works of Zhou Chunya”, Taipei Nothern Banker Art & Culture Art Gallery, Taipei, China in 1997; “Zhou Chunya” CRACE Art Gallery Taibei China in 1994; “The works of Zhou Chunya” Dusseldorf Germany in 1987; Zhou Chunya Invitational Exhibition Linz Austria. The most important group Exihibitions are: “Zhou Chunya, Zeng Fanzhi and Ji Dachun”, Longrun Art at Beijing in 2006; “Focus on China”, WBK Vrije Academie Den Haan, Holland in 2005; “Biennale international d’Art Contemporain” Chinois de Montpellier in France; “Land of Warmth”, Red Bridge Gallery in Shanghai; “Dreaming of Dragon’s Nation”, Contemporary Art Exhibition from China at Irish MOMA in Ireland in 2004; “Living in Chengdu, Chinese Contemporary Oil Painting” at Shenzhen Art Museum in China; “New Works by Liu Wei, Zheng Zaidong, Zhou Chunya” at Shanghai Gallery of Art, Three on the Bund; “Alors, La China” at Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2003; “Six Marks of the Paintbrush” at Gallery Miejska Arsenal in Pozna.
