Piero Dorazio
Biography
Born in Rome, Dorazio completed classical studies, then attended the Faculty of Architecture for four years. In 1944 he approached the Roman Abstractist movement, then, in 1947, he participated in the Forma 1 Group with, among others, Achille Perilli, Antonio Sanfilippo, Giulio Turcato and Carla Accardi. In 1950 he opened the “L’Age d’Or” bookshop gallery in Rome with Perilli and Guerrini, which the following year merged with the Origine Group (whose participants included Alberto Burri and Giuseppe Capogrossi), creating the Origine Foundation.
In 1953 he began a phase of several stays and exhibitions in the United States, where he came into contact with de Kooning, Rothko, Pollock and many others among the most influential artists of the time. In the following years, his work as a painter and his frequent trips to the main capitals of the world also saw him teach at prestigious universities, such as the School of Fine Arts at Pennsylvania University.
He also participated in several editions of the Venice Biennale, in particular the one in 1960, where a personal room was dedicated to him. In the 70s he stopped teaching and moved to Todi, where he remained, dedicating himself exclusively to painting, until 2005, the year of his death.
