Biography
Born on 30 January 1935 in Shanghai, Hsiao Chin (Xiao Qin) is a master of abstract painting in which Eastern spirituality and Western art converge.
He left China for Taiwan around the 1940s. He started to study art in 1952 at the National Taiwan Normal University (graduated in 1955).
Hsiao Chin and the To-Fan movement
In 1956, he founded a movement bringing together painters ‘the Eight Bandits’ with an abstract and innovative tendency, called the To-Fan Art Group.
In 1956, thanks to a scholarship from the Spanish government, he landed in Europe and started working with Studio Marconi in Milan. After moving to Milan, he began to frequent the circle of artists that met in the Giamaica bar, including Piero Manzoni and Lucio Fontana, with whom he had participated in the Albisola ceramics production.
Hsiao Chin and the Punto Movement
In 1961 he founded the Punto Movement whose work The Force of Meditation (1964) is its essence, with a formal pictorial language devoted to contemplation and calm.
His art combines Eastern spirituality and culture with Western characteristics and approach and therefore eludes precise characterisation. His many expressions are highly appreciated both in the East (Beijing, Taipei, Taiwan) and in the West, especially in Italy and the United States, even when his vision becomes more rigid and geometric.
Numerous exhibitions around the world
His canvases in recent years have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Guangdong Museum of Art, the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the National Museum of China in Beijing, the Shanghai Museum of Art, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in Taichung (1992 retrospective) and the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, the Museo Europeo de Arte Moderno in Barcelona, and the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome.
The Hsiao Chin Art Research Centre, to date
In 2018, the China Art Museum in Shanghai established the Hsiao Chin Art Research Center. In Latvia in 2020 there was a major retrospective of his art (Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Center).
He currently lives and works between Taiwan and Milan.
