In the panorama of American art of the late twentieth century, few artists have been able to confront the mystery of color with the same lyrical intensity as Paul Jenkins.
Phenomena Ever Cross Over, created in 1969, represents one of the expressive peaks of this inner dialogue between pictorial matter and spiritual dimension.
1969 is no ordinary year, it is a year of epochal transition, of cultural revolutions, lunar landings, historical fractures, humanity crosses the threshold of the known, and Jenkins, in perfect harmony with the time, explores those border territories where painting does not narrate, but reveals.
Ever Cross Over is an invitation to push beyond, to understand that every line, every chromatic glaze is a sign of passage, a signal of transformation, the artist, with his unmistakable poured paint technique, lets the acrylic flow like psychic waves, orchestrating the imponderable, nothing is accidental, and yet everything seems the result of a natural event, of a phenomenology of color that expands and retracts, like cosmic breath.
The intensity of the blue, which dominates the work like a celestial abyss, suggests emotional depths and inner spaces still unexplored, it is not a static blue, but in motion: it pulses, vibrates, dissolves into milky vapors that allow faint constellations of light to emerge, beside it, the amber and earthy arc, suspended in the upper part, appears like an atmospheric mass, a land seen from above, a horizon in transit, and at the heart of the composition, subtle fissures of red and black break the balance, introducing spiritual tension: they are the signs of crossing, perhaps wounds, perhaps paths, certainly will.
Jenkins does not fight chaos, he listens to it, he directs it with rare discipline.
The work breathes in the dialectic between lightness and gravity: the fluid matter, left to pour with apparent freedom, is in reality guided by a clairvoyant intuition, there is no figure, there is no narrative, and yet everything speaks.
It is a phenomenon, an unrepeatable event and from here, the power of the title: Phenomena Ever Cross Over, one has the impression that the pictorial planes intersect like parallel dimensions, in a continuous crossing beyond.
The viewer is invited to follow those thin filaments, those diagonals that cut through the chromatic sea, and to seek, not a landing, but a passage, it is a work that is not seen only once: every contemplation changes its meaning, every light alters its landscape.
For a collector, to possess a canvas like this means to welcome not only a crucial testimony of post-Pollockian Abstract Expressionism, but above all a relic of chromatic awareness.
